He then returned to Seattle to complete a Surgical Preservation of the Hip and Pelvis fellowship with the Hansjorg Wyss Hip and Pelvis Center with Dr. Keith Mayo.

Finally, he completed a combined Orthopedic and Neurosurgical spine fellowship at the CORE Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Shaffer is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and belongs to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), AO Trauma and AO Spine societies, North American Spine Society (NASS), Orthopedic Trauma Association (OTA), as well as the International Society for Advancement of Spine Surgery (ISASS) and the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (SMISS).

After many years of fellowships and private practice, Dr. Shaffer is glad to be back in Seattle, treating the community that he has known and loved.
